Chichester

Chichester is the only city in West Sussex and is the County Town. It has a long history as a settlement from Roman times and was important in Anglo-Saxon times. Today with a good array of shops, art galleries, restaurants, coffee shops, pubs and cafes set around the 16th century Market Cross it is well worth a visit. There is a weekly market held every Wednesday in the Cattle Market car park and a fortnightly farmers market held alternate Saturdays around the Market Cross.
Added reasons to visit are obviously the Cathedral, which dates back to 1075, the Festival and Minerva theatres, which offer full and varied entertainment programmes. Other attractions include boat rides on the canal or a walk around the city walls taking in the lovely Bishops Palace Gardens. Further afield but worth a visit are the Harbour and Fishbourne Roman Palace. Traffic permitting Chichester is about 15 minutes in the car.
